Owls

Greetings!  When I saw this week's owl theme, I thought of how popular they were in the arts and crafts world during the 70's, and how the trend is back.  I remember seeing them in greeting cards, embroidery, macrame, ceramics, rock painting, and even in lead crystal form as the ones in my photograph.

For my tag, I challenged myself to use primarily punches to model my owl.  I started by cutting out an oval for its base.  Then, I proceeded to punch flower petals, hearts, ovals, branches, circles and medallions.  I used the hearts for the feather cluster bases, as well as a small one for the beak.  The branches were used for the claws, and believe the other punch uses are easily recognisable.  For the tag's background, I cropped a portion of a page with a night cityscape print.  I cut the moon shape with a circle punch out of handmade paper for texture.  As a finishing touch, I knotted a couple of strips of jute twine in coordinating colours.

I had a blast finding unusual ways to use my punches, as well as reminiscing about my youth.  Blessings!
