C is for Calligraphy

Thank you for all your lovely comments on my calligraphy tags, I hope I have inspired some of you to dust off your nibs and inks and brush up your handwriting!   Neesie mentioned that she had once done some calligraphy on silk, What a great idea! I had to give that a try!

This week I found the perfect book in which to keep my Abecedary of Calligraphy.   It is A5 size with waxed paper  between the 27 black pages; that’s one page per letter plus a title page.
It is with this in mind that I made my first tag:
C is for Calligraphy.  I painted a manila tag with purple watercolour, then used gold ink to write ‘Calligraphy A-Z’ . On the page itself I have written 'The Art of Beautiful Handwriting' in gold ink.
On the reverse I have stuck the dictionary definition of Calligraphy. The colours match the cover of the book.  It is attached to the book with gold elastic cord and  doubles as a title tag and bookmark.
C is also for Copperplate
Copperplate calligraphy was developed by English handwriting masters in the 18th century. Admired for its fluidity and beauty, letters have elaborate flourishes and the writing leans strongly to the right. Copperplate is written with a sharp pointed pen.
The large tag is written using copper gutta on purple silk.  I love the flourishes of this ABC.
I have made a tiny tag with just the word ‘copperplate’ with decorated flourishes. This was my first attempt at writing copperplate letters, so please forgive my wobbly hand.
On the opposite page I have added a full alphabet of Copperplate letters, for future reference.
I am loving this Alphabet theme; it’s great to see the variety in our weekly contributions!  Can’t wait to see what you’ve all been doing this week.
Take care till next week,
Jane

  1. Beautiful work Jane, the book will be a lovely thing to look back on when the year is up and to pass on one day! I wish I could write like that, perhaps when I can retire I will have this on my 'to do' list! x
