U is for UNCIALS

Hello everyone, thank you for your lovely comments last week on my Tiger, all your T Tags were Terrific.
On a day like today I guess I  should have done U for Umbrella, but sticking to my calligraphy theme I chose U for Uncials.
The Uncials alphabet is based on letters developed by the Romans from an earlier Greek Uncial alphabet.  These Roman Uncials were mainly used from the 4th century for writing scriptures, whereas the classic Roman letters were used for secular writing.  Uncials is a majuscule alphabet developed before ‘upper and lower case’ letters came into existence.  On my tag I Underlined Uncials in red ink and added some Undertext details similar to those found in the Book of Kells, which of course was written using Uncials.  I added the nib I used for the red detail.  For the main alphabet I used a much larger nib.

I uncovered this map with my Grandfather’s British Army Service papers whilst doing my family history research. He served alongside the Canadian Forces after the WW2.  The heading is written in an Uncials style font.

On the reverse of the original map is a blue and gold Canadian Forces emblem with ‘Canadian Forces Hospitality and Information Bureau’ written in red.  I have used this part to make a mini tag and used the colours for my ties on all 3 tags.
I’m looking forward to an Undisturbed afternoon to look at all your Unbelievably creative tags, see you later.
That’s all for now
Love Jane xx
