The letter X

Hello everyone!  Wonderful W tags last week, shame we can’t say the same about the weather – just wet and windy!
It’ll be interesting to see what you’ve all made of this week’s challenge.  Thank you so much for your lovely comments on my Words Tag.

This week I have two calligraphy terms on my tag.

The first is x-height – this is the height of the minuscules without ascenders or descenders, in other words the height of an 'x'.   The x-height is usually proportional to the width of the nib.  For Italic writing the x-height is 5 nib widths.  Ascenders are 3 nib widths and descenders another 3 nib widths. I have tried to show this rule on my tag – I left the pencil guidelines visible.

The second X is xylography.  This is the art of printing texts or illustrations, from woodblocks.  I have written this definition on my tag, along with prints from 2 wood blocks – a flower and a bird.

On the left of the tag is a small copy (or xerox) of a medieval style woodcut print showing a scribe at work.  The tag is finished off with various brown threads.
Finally X is for Kisses -  this is not a tag as such but a stitched label on the corner of the patchwork quilt I made for my daughter for her 21st birthday earlier this month.

Bye for now,

Love Jane xxx

  5. Love the tag and the wood blocks--just lovely! Thanks for teaching me some new terms. I aspired to be a calligrapher once until I realized I'd have to give up coffee to steady my hands! :-)
