Complementary Colors

I absolutely LOVE to play with colors!  This is not only evident in my artwork, but in the way I dress, decorate, and even in the way I cook.  There is so much richness to this element of art, and it can express so many feelings and attitudes towards life.

I began my tag by using the Tim Holtz scrollwork and tag dies to create my background.  As I was working on my design, I though of Henri Matisse, the French artist known for his use of aggressive brush strokes and bold primary colors.  Matisse was a draughtsman, print maker, sculptor, and painter, but was also involved in stage, costume and church window design during his lifetime.  During the last 14 years of his life, he started "painting with scissors" to create his famous collages.  Since I also love collage, I decided to incorporate hand cut silhouettes into my design.  They're very simple and crude, but I think they work well in this composition.  I completed my tag design by knotting some cording to the top.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to leave a comment on my wedding tag post.  May your life be filled with colors.  Blessings!

  6. Love the motion that you created in this tag and the dual complementary colors pairs! When I saw the tag, a song immediately played in my head: "Give Me the Night" by George Benson. Do you know it? I love how picture inspires sound and vice-versa. My husband is a film composer, so he definitely brings music to a visual! Nice job!

  8. Arnoldo I have a book of Matisse Paper cuts and only recently flipping through them inspired a class and a small body of art of my own.
It is the simplicity of your silhouettes which adds the wonderful graphic feel to your tag!
