The Swinging Sixties

The 1960's were truly filled with swinging events that brought about excitement and up-to-date changes in every aspect of life throughout the world.  A few of these events include the foundation of the Peace Corps, Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup Can reveal, the James Bond movies, the Beatles, the civil rights movements, the launching of Hasbro's G.I. Joe action figures, the opening of Japan's first Bullet Train, the appearance of mini-skirts, the birth of the Star Trek series, and Neil Armstrong, who became the first man to step on the moon.  However, many of these changes also brought about devastating events such as the construction of the Berlin Wall, President John F. Kennedy's assassination, Nelson Mandela's sentencing to life in prison, the Vietnam War against communism, and the Tlatelolco Massacre of students in Mexico, to name just a few.  I was only a child during this period, but many of these events definitely impacted who I am today as a man, educator and artist.

Speaking of art, my tag was inspired by the styles, colors, and patterns of the time.  I began by cutting a tag shape with a Tim Holtz die and piecing 3 different papers to form my background.  Next, I illustrated a portrait of a lady with the traditional beehive hair-do and exaggerated eye make-up of the time.  I attached her to the tag, and surrounded her with a spray of flowers in coordinating colors with the background.  I used a Dymo label maker, which would have been available during this time period, to type the phrase from the popular late 1960's television comedy show, "Laugh-In."  As a finishing touch, I tied an orange cord with large spangle ends to the top.

Although thinking about this week's theme arouse a mixture of feelings within me, I did have a "groovy" time designing my tag.  By the way, I want to praise everyone for their marvelous tags last week.  I didn't have time to comment, because of work, but promise to make my rounds this week.  Thank you to those who left a comment on mine.  Blessings!

  4. Arnoldo you are so right! As a child about to be set free in the 70's there was such and much change.
As your funky tag demonstrates it was a time of exaggeration, of seeking and sometimes being devastated by what we found.

  9. Superb tag Arnoldo. I watched a video today of Martin Luther King Jr's, 'I have a dream' speech, as it is 50 years ago to the day when it was made. It is as inspiring today as much as then in my opinion.
I hope your work commitments aren't as constricting as last week :o)
