Tattered and Torn

Julia's Blankie
When my niece Julia was a tiny girl, I gave her a small pink blanket trimmed with "silky" (faux satin) with her name and a little flower embroidered on it. For many more years that blanket, along with her tiny, plump thumb were Julia's constant comfort items. She went to nap with it. She went to bed with it. She wore it as a cape, as a hat, as a veil. Julia's blankie went to her friends' houses, to Grandma's, to nursery school, on vacation, and to the market. It was washed from time to time whenever her mom could get it away from her. Julia is now 35 and has a 5 year old of her own. Hidden in a blue box, high up in the closet of her master bedroom, Julia still has several long strands of cotton and silky that are left over from being loved to death - the torn and tattered remains of her blankie.
My tag is a tribute to that blanket.  I dyed a piece of cotton flannel light pink and then distressed with rocks and strong tea. I stitched a small border of silky on it and embroidered it with Julia's name and a tiny pink flower.

  2. My girls had one each, they called it their bambet, I've learnt since that the correct name is a 'transitional object' all I knew then is that they went to sleep comforted by it! Lovely tag with a lovely story. x

  4. It's always that silky bit around the edge that gives the most comfort. I think we can all relate to your tag, love it.

  9. Love, love your idea (and not just because of your niece's name!). It's a whole story in itself and one to which we can all relate. So lovely.
