This tagwas inspired by a found magpie feather. At first glance magpies appear to have black and white plumage, but whenseen close-up their black feathers take on a more colourful huewith a purplish-blue iridescent sheen to the wing feathers.
On oneside of the tag I have written ‘2 for joy’ and stuck the feather next toit. I like the way it goes over the sideof the tag.
I used purply-blue pearlescent paint for the writing, and dark iridescent buglebeads as a trim.
Magpies have a reputation for stealing bright andshiny things, so I have trimmed the tag with an old silver earring and asparkly diamante.
According to an old superstition the number of magpies you see determines if you will have bad luck or not. There are many different versions, so I chose this version to write on on the other sideof the main tag:
One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret, never to be told,
Eight for a wish,
Nine for a kiss,
Ten for a big surprise.
I’m a bitdisappointed with the photos because none of them have really picked up the beautiful electricblue of the feather; it looks much better in real life. Also now that I've been handling the feather so much, now it looks a bit scruffy! But at least I had the Joy of seeing it at its best. Thank you to all of you who have left such lovely comments on my tags, they are much appreciated.
Wishing you all a lovely week
Jane xx
Beautiful idea to use a magpie feather, love so much what you have done with it, Fabulous,May x x x
ReplyDeleteI like it too and I the thinking behind it.

I think this is very well done and I understand what you mean about its beauty not translating in a photograph. Isn't it a shame that only expert photographers with expensive equipment can barely pick up things like the vivid purple in this.
ReplyDeleteA lovely tag, I like the way you have represented the magpie.
ReplyDeleteLove the photo of your tag in front of the grape hyacinths (I think that's what the flowers are). Don't get uptight about colors in photos-- even pro photographers understand nature does not wholly transfer to film, etc.
ReplyDeleteI love way you have used the feather too and agree about the colours. They are beautiful birds and very loyal to their mate, I always feel a bit sad when I see one on its own! Lovely tag xx
ReplyDeleteBrilliant tag!! We have magpies building a massive nest nearby...Mmmm must remember not to leave any bright and shiny treasures laying about in the garden!! LOLx
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about the beauty of magpie feathers so even if the camera didn't pick it up, I can imagine it. Lovely tag, great take on the bird theme.
ReplyDeleteMade even more special by the poem on the back ;-)
