Tale of the seam ripper | Let me tell you how I feel about sewing. It's great that with a change of a few letters to an old saying, my feelings are easily expressed. " You will rip what you sew". Boy, do I know that! But, let me set the scene. My mother, grandmother, and aunts were all fabulous seamstresses creating doll clothes to wedding gowns, even doll wedding gowns. Me, well, my mother lost patience. I sewed too fast and not straight. The seam ripper was not my friend although we were often together. So, when I needed something repaired or made, I asked the experts. Don't get me wrong, I have made quilts, skirts, dresses, etc, but sewing is not my talent! I appreciate artfully sewn items. This tag has a goat head stamp on the dress form to express how my mom and I often butted heads, some thread labels, a piece of paper measuring tape, a pattern piece flower, some stitching from that same sewing machine I practiced on, and a fake seam ripper. I can't find the real one. Maybe the dog buried it in the yard. No great loss. LOL |
Fabulous tag! Had to laugh at your story - it could have been me. Grandmother knitted and crocheted, Mum was a fantastic knitter, Aunt sewed and knitted...me? didn't have the patience for any of them!
ReplyDeleteI do like a tag with a story, and this one made me laugh! Well, we can't all be good at everything! It reminded me of my mother, who came from a great sewing/dressmaking family, always surrounded by fabric and threads. When she married my dad, she couldn't believe that his mother only had 2 cotton reels-one black, one white- and a couple of needles in her sewing basket! So my grandmother would have been with you on this!
ReplyDeleteLove your tag! And, yes, we all rip what we sew once in a while!
ReplyDeleteThis is great to me. I aspire to be able to create a tag with a story that can be seen in the tag.
