Australia

When I was a boy, I had a toy soldier collection, which included the GI Joe - Australian Jungle Fighter.  My parents gave him to me for my birthday, circa 1966.  I wish I still had him, but unfortunately, I'm not sure what happened to him after I left for college in the late 1970's.

Inspired by my late GI Joe, I used the Tim Holtz toy soldier die as a base to make my Australian Jungle Fighter.  (It is the same die I used to make my Buckingham Palace Guard in the Capital Cities tag, on January 14th.)  Next, I used the Dot Matrix embossing folder and used yellow, orange and brown ink pads to simulate an Aborigine's design on the background.  I also printed a vintage Australian map and postage stamps off the web to create some layering.  I used a bookplate die to make my label and tied it with some jute twine.  As a finishing touch, I tied another strip of jute twine to the top and added some Aborigine's looking beads to it.

I've had so much fun designing uniforms to fit the soldier die, that I have decided to take every opportunity I can to develop a new series.  I can't wait to see what everyone else has done, since I haven't had a chance to do so all week.  Blessings!

  8. Your "slouch"- hatted soldier is a great image for Australia -ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) day is an annual national day of remembrance and your soldier reminds me so much of this special day.
